May 2002 - NewsletterMemorial to CYRIL BROWN- The open meeting was held on April 15th in the Village Hall to discuss a memorial that would be fitting to Cyril. 29 residents attended and most contributed to the discussion. Ideas put forward where as follows: A seat /bench with plaque. Sports Trophy. Establish Tree with plaque. Trophy Cabinet. Flower bed. Village Sign Post. It was decided that a committee be set up & 7 people where voted on. A second vote was taken and the outcome decided that with the £376.00 prices be obtained for village sign. The sign will be placed hopefully, near or on the flowerbeds at the village centre crossroads. This place was chosen as Cyril was a part of the whole village a gentlemen who gave too everything in the village, anybody who ask for something got it. He annually gave donations to Church, Chapel & Pensioners Dinner along with a lot of donations he gave anonymously by his own choice. Although, he will always be remembered for his years at the Cross Keys, in his retirement Cyril took great pride in the flower beds & it was considered that they, along with a sign be a fitting memorial to be seen by everyone walking, driving, calling into the shop or pub. The main concern raised was vandals, but we hope that with the great respect Cyril had with the young, this will not happen. Mr John Harmer (Cyrils cousin) thanked the village for their thoughtfulness and is donating a Trophy for the darts team. His brother Royce is an artist and is currently painting a series of pictures of village scenes & a portrait of Cyril, which he has asked to be presented to the village hall as a thank you from his family. BURGLARS - There seems to be a lot about at the moment. Keep everything LOCKED. Mr Fred Butt has been contacted by the local Police Crime Prevention who have offered the village SHED ALARMS at a reduced price of approx.: £ 5.00-£6.00. To get this price we have to order a minimum quantity so anyone wanting one please contact Mr BUTT on 363362. £ 6.00 is a small price to pay for extra security. Neighbourhood Watch Police are asking all residents for observations for a White Transit van, registration no. Y146 SUG. If the vehicle is sighted DO NOT approach the vehicle or its occupants and DO NOT allow into, or onto your property. If spotted please contact the police station. There are also chain letters being sent asking for money. Police ask for you to send no money to any addresses and to disregard the letters and take no action. Village Hall AGM - Was well attended this year 27 nothing to do with Cyrils meeting & the doors being locked ! After the chairman thanked all the committee members for their individual work came the Treasurers report which was better than last year due to extra fund raising events held in the village. He thanked the villagers for their support with these events and hope that more people would participate in forthcoming events. The accounts showed that although better off, funds are still low and revenue must continue to be raised. The planned extension is still in the pipe line and 32 grant application have been put in, unfortunately only 1 has so far been accepted, with a promise of £ 500.00 which leaves approx.; £21,500 to raise ! Due to a problem with an 18th Party late last year when a resident called the police, after their 14year old was relieved of their alcohol, the POLICE advised us that it is their wish that no further 18th Partys be held in the Village Hall. At the meeting the floor was asked to vote on this & a unanimous vote was taken that these event be stopped until a time where the Police say otherwise. VANDALS The childrens swings have been cut down. Last month a number of flowers where ripped up, For Sale signs & letter boxes pulled up, we have been asked by a group of teenager to mention that this was NOT them & that they know who did it, but arent prepared to say as yet! SO BEWARE everyone is watching everyone !!!!!! BATS We have been contacted by Bat Conservation to ask if anyone is interested in participating in The Sunrise Survey, which takes place on July 28th, its aim is to monitor bats across Britain. The survey is east to take part in & does not require any specialist knowledge or equipment More next month
