FULSTOW NEWSLETTER – APRIL 2003

“April wet, good wheat”

“A cold April brings us bread & wine”

“ When the elm leaf is like a mouse’s ear, then to sow barley never fear

Found in “The Countryside Companion” published in 1918

Well, lets start with good news that Pete Smith is out of hospital and on the road to recovery, I am sure everyone wishes him well.

A few thankyou’s have been asked too be mentioned –

To Ray Padbury from mending Cyril Brown’s bench from outside the pub, at no cost.

The church and I think everyone would like to thank Karen Nurrish for all the years that she has, at NO charge, cut and strimmed the grass and kept the churchyard tidy. It has been suggested that volunteers come forward and a rota be drawn up for 2 or 3 people could cut the grass but more so the hedges etc once a month or fortnightly, during the spring & summer, due to the fact that Karen no longer has the equipment to do this. Anyone willing to help out please telephone 363647 or 363405

Also, to thank Terry Nurrish for all his work throughout the village and on the village green & hall grass over the years.

Entrance is £ 1.00 Refreshments will be served and there will be a few stalls, Cake Stall, Book Stall, Children’s tombola etc if everyone could donate something PLEASE even a tin of beans, pop or a cake

.

A lot of people don’t realize that the church has to find a lot of money to stay open (in the thousands) each year, and with the age of our church and repairs this is getting harder to do.

As the late Cyril Brown said to me early last year “ I would hope that even though a lot of the village don’t use the church, they would not see it closed” and this goes for the chapel as well.

So even if you wouldn’t normal go to Church, £1.00 and 20mins out of your Bank holiday weekend is not a lot to ask, after all When DID you last visit our Church?

Can we have any unwanted books for the Book Stall for the Church. Please contact J Cass 363330 - Will collect. Anything else please contact Mrs. L Thornes or Mrs. Joyce Marshall Snr.

The church council would also like to thank Colin & Kathy Thompson for allowing them to use their green house for the weekend.

PAVILION - We are going to give the pavilion its annual spring clean on Sunday May 4th (Bank Holiday Weekend) so could as many footballers and cricketers as possible please turn up at 11am to help.

Again people don’t realize that the Village Hall & Pavilion are subject to council taxes and without volunteers to clean, cut grass and fund raise etc these would not stay open.

Covenham has CHALLENGED us, as a village to an inter-village tug of war. They want us to find a Men’s & Lady’s team for the 7th of June (I think) there will also be refreshments, a few games for fun only for every one including the children on a field in Covenham. I am reliably informed that this used to be an annual event between the villages and that the Fulstow Flyers ALWAYS beat Covenham, so lets show them we haven’t gone soft. Please contact either Nicola Pike 363405 or put your name down in the shop.

Open Gardens – this will be Sunday, June 15th.  More people are needed to open their gardens PLEASE. The gardening club would really like a few more gardens in Churchthorpe, they don’t have to be from Gardeners World in fact a few really ones with the weeds and children would be quite nice. Anyone, willing to do this for one afternoon please contact Thora Munnings 363393. Proceeds will once again go between the Church & Chapel.

Cricket  - The Village Cricket team is in desperate need of some new players, You don’t have to be Darren Gough, as long as you have 2 legs, can hold a bat & do a bit of running, please come along on Tuesday Evenings 6.30pm to the Sports Pavilion. Seriously, the village hall had to raise a lot of money for the cricket pitch so help out and get great a team going  or Tel: Stuart Bown 363674 see Guy Acton

A note from Steve & Maureen Mikklesen -thanks very much for the mention of our move in the Fulstow magazine. It was very kind and much appreciated. If you have another edition due soon, could you add a couple of lines to say how much we appreciated all the support and good wishes from our friends in Fulstow.
We had a wonderful six years in the village and it was very hard to leave such good friends and neighbours. But we'd be pleased to see you again should you fancy enjoying some French hospitality...

We're settling in well and getting used to the French way of life.  Much less stressful, I have to report. Are also gradually coming to grips with the mound of boxes that currently contain our lives. The journey across went well, but I don't think I'll ever forget eight hours of driving with two wailing and mournful cats. One also managed to be seasick which added to the entertainment...
