Fulstow News April 2005

Firstly on a private note from me I would like to thank everyone who sent cards & wishes to my family at the sudden loss of my Dad, Ron Kettleborough last month

The funeral of Pete Smith will take place on Wednesday, 13 th April at 10.30am with a service at Church followed by a service at Grimsby Crematorium. Pete who sadly died last week was born in the village 75 years ago, his father & family farmed the Moated Grange and he continued to help out until the end. Pete was a member of the darts team for the Cross Keys for 45years, and played football until he was in his late 40's. He was in the home guard in WW11 and took an active role in village life. I think my memories of Pete, like many, will be driving along Station Road and seeing Pete, in his brown overalls, always with a wave and a smile and time to chat. Our sympathy's are with his family and close friends at this time

The hall has some new things going on, so either book or just turn up

Did you know we have a potentional Olympic Champion in our mist, Alex McNamara who has Hemiplegics (He is unable to use one side of his body) has been selected for “The World Class Start & Potential” This means that all being well he will be riding for Britain in the games in 2008 In July he is riding in the Internationals for Britain in Somerset & Gloucestershire. To enable Alex to compete at this level, his mum (Corrine) has just purchased his a specialised saddle and this alone was nearly £1,400.

To be able to compete Alex has to travel to Gloucester for a minimum of 4 times a years for squad sessions, this means not only find a B&B for himself & his mum, travel costs but also livery & food for the horse. Many people think that once you get this far with a sport you get full funding from the government help well you DON'T, Alex is entitle to a small pot from Sport England but this as yet has not materialised.

So Alex & Corrine are looking for someone to help with sponsorship and if anyone has time to be an “unpaid” campaign manager or even advise, as fund raising is all new to Corrine, so if you know anyone or can help please call Corrine on 363437 She will be willing to have adverts on the horsebox anything that would help take the pressure off the finance side of thing and she can spend more time helping Alex to train for competition Alex was also presented to Princess Ann when she visited the area recently read all about Alex at www.amcnamara.org.uk

Tickets are now on sale for the Fulstow Players next performance “Deck Chairs” on April 21 st , 22 nd & 23 rd tickets are £7.50 each and will include a Bread & Cheese Supper Tel: 363344 to book

In April we are fortunate to have 2 of the most fantastic shows we have had the privilege to present coming to our Village Hall;

The first is a thrilling, colourful, vibrant explosion of singing and dancing from a spectacular 8 piece African troupe of talented singers and dancers. Siyaya – a Zimbabwean dance company - with their new dance show, “Thatha”, will be here on the Friday 15th April at 8.00 p.m . Siyaya have created a new spectacular fusing of music and dance talents, which takes you on a journey across Africa .  Travelling from the far north, cutting across the west and rounding up in townships of Makokoba in Bulawayo; Thatha is a journey that reveals the joys of life through contemporary and traditional African music and dance.The greatest African instrument has always been the human voice and as such is used extensively in the show.  Drums play a major role in the music, and a collection of shakers and other percussion instruments, some made from dried seedpods, collected during Siyaya's travels in Africa create the foundation for a unique sound.

The 2nd show is equally exciting but from a totally different musical genre;

The Old Rope String Band a unique montage of Folk music, clowning and cabaret will be performing in the Village Hall on Sun. 24th April at 8.00 p.m. The absolutely fabulous and completely inimitable Old Rope String Band is hilariously funny.  It does tricks and runs round.  It makes people laugh out loud.  The music is an infectious selection of paso dobles, polkas, jigs, reels, tangos and songs from Mexico , Ireland , Scotland , Scandinavia and beyond.  All played on fiddle, banjo, trombone, accordion and trumpet. The undoubted musical strengths of the band create a foundation on which they build a visual extravaganza of acrobatics, juggling and dancing.  The show features clogging, music played upside down, the famous South African wellie-boot dancing, the simultaneous use of six instruments and other feats that beggar description.  Both shows Tickets £7.50 / £5.00 Concessions. Tel: 01507 363682 Bob Laking (must book).
