Christmas Poem... Let Me Be A Child Again
-- by Ellen Fair - Copyright 1998 -- fairelle@gte.net

Let me be a child again
If only for this night
Let me feel excitement as
I gaze upon the lights
Place the shiny presents
In perfect order every day
And be the perfect angel
So Santa comes my way

Let me breathe the sweet aroma
Of tarts and apple pie
And see red candles burning
And gifts with big red ties
Let me listen to the voices
Of the carollers on the lawn
And dream of brand new Christmas toys
As I await the dawn

Let me listen for the footsteps
Of the reindeer as they light
And think that I hear Santa
Dashing off into the night
And...Mama...if you hear me...
Please hold me close once more
And whisper "Merry Christmas"
As you softly close my door...

Father Christmas?

Nicholas, a son of devout Christian parents living in Turkey , was Bishop to the city of Myra , where he was much loved for his benevolence, particularly by the children.

In those days, as in some parts of the world today, there was a tradition that whenever a woman wanted to marry, her father must produce a dowry, or gifts to give to the bridegroom and his family. A woman without a dowry could not hope to marry.

Nicholas was aware that many in his parish were very poor, and, coming from a wealthy family himself, he often tried to help. One Christmas Eve, as was his custom, he was silently visiting the houses in his parish, making sure each of the children had a gift of some sort.

He had heard that the daughters of a man in the village had no dowry but dearly wished to marry, so when he came to their home, seeing they had left woollen stockings out to dry, he secretly placed enough money in each to ensure their dowry.

This last month has seen us lose three very special ladies from the village and thoughts and sympathy goes to their families at this time.

Joan Clark well what can I say, how we will miss seeing her biking round the village to the shop and at bingo. Also our thoughts are also with the Cass family for Kay Cass & Derek Atkinson and family at the lose of Elsie. They will all be truly missed.

Christmas is also one of the hardest times for family's who have lost a loved one during the year, so spare a thought & prayer for all those who will be missing someone this year.

In our own community, we remember dearly,

Keith Davies, Maurice Willerton, John Marwood, Joan Clark,
Elsie Atkinson & Kay Cass.

There is a lot going on this month Christmas Bingo Sunday 26 th at the hall this is good for adults & children alike. School Fayre, Christmas lunch, Cross Keys Christmas draw it's all raffles BUT as always they are good raffles so buy a ticket for each they are all good causes.

We have lots of new people in the village this year and hope they are enjoying their new homes in Fulstow. Come along to the Hall or Pub this month and enjoy yourselves, New Year's Eve why bother going into town, when you can have a great time in your village without the hassle of taxi's or babysitters.

Nicholas was much beloved but didn't look at all like the Santa Claus (which means Saint Nicholas) we know today. He would almost certainly have had a brown skin and would have dressed in the clerical garb of the third century but because of his kindness at Christmas, we remember him and the stocking tradition still.

Dutch children put hay and carrots in their shoes for the horse of Sinterklass, or good old Santa Claus, now the patron saint of children but not everyone believes it is Santa who brings presents.

In Sweden it is a kindly gnome called the tomte who lives under the floorboards. And in Mexico , Spain and some parts of France children put out shoes, to be filled by the Three Kings. In northern France children hope they will not be visited by Pere Fouettard -- Father Spanker!

Italian children pray that La Befana will leave them gifts at Epiphany (Jan 6th) but in Greece the Saint of Letters, Agios Vasilis comes, unless you live in the mountains in which case, tiny elves are responsible for leaving you your heart's desire.

The tradition of giving gifts is symbolic of the gifts given to Jesus and of the fact that Jesus himself was a gift to the world .

Congratulations to Sam & Andy on the birth of Jozeph Paul Edward

Happy Birthday to Jo & Kaz Christmas Eve should be real fun this year
